In the early hours of today, residents of Koforidua embarked on a street demonstration, highlighting the deplorable condition of their town’s roads. The protest was orchestrated by a group known as the Koforidua Development Advocates. Demonstrators hailing from areas such as Apenkwa, Abogri, Nyamekrom, Monrovia, KTU, Asokore, Oyoko, Akwadum, Mpaem, Zongo, and Ada, among others, joined forces to bring the government’s attention to the pressing issue of terrible roads in their locality.
While the local Member of Parliament for New Juaben South had previously announced that 80% of Koforidua’s roads had been allocated to contractors, the demonstrators however remained resolute in the quest to demonstrate and not to call it off. This is because a similar protest had been called off about two months ago due to a promise from the MP which failed to materialise.

The protesters voiced their dissatisfaction with the government’s disregard for the deteriorating road network in the region. They highlighted that only minor sections of roads in the market centre had been recently asphalted, leaving the roads in Zongo, Ada, Nyamekrom, Apenkwa, Monrovia, Asokore, and other areas in an appalling state. The demonstrators expressed their frustration at the daily challenges they face while navigating these poor roads.
In a statement, the demonstrators lamented the stark contrast between the government’s swift construction of roads in Assin North and the apparent neglect of their road predicament. They are urgently appealing to the government and relevant authorities to promptly address and rectify the dire condition of the roads in Koforidua township.
Generally, the demonstration was peaceful, with no case of misconduct. The demonstrators conducted themselves well. The police who were deployed need to be recommended for their professionalism during the protest.
