On May 15, 1979, while Ghana was preparing for elections scheduled for June 18, 1979, for a new civilian Government, there was an attempted Coup that was quelled by the military forces led by the Army Commander, Major General Odartey-Wellington, in an uprising which saw one airman lose his life.
